Introduction

The target audience of this feature is our African customers. It will allow them to use the platform at any given time and reduce costs on internet traffic.

In this case study, I will describe my workflow and explain the background of the applied solution.

Problem

Users of LATTO come from a variety of countries, including Africa.

Statistics showed that user engagement in Africa was low in comparison with other countries. After a thorough investigation of these behavior patterns, it was concluded that the issue was related to considerably higher costs of daytime internet traffic in Africa than those available at nighttime. Our mission was to return African customers to our platform.

Brainstorming

After some brainstorming meetings with PMs and leaders of the development team, it was decided to add a feature which allows users to download movies and episodes at night and watch them during the daytime.

Research

It's important to mention that when this project was developed in 2015, my research was focused on finding the same or similar features in the entertainment world. I needed to better understand how it works and evaluate its pros and cons.
However, the option to download media wasn't popular in 2015. Even products like Netflix didn’t have it, so finding a solution for something this uncommon was a challenge. I had to sift through various sources specialized in downloading media torrents.

The research uncovered the following:
  1. Download Cancellation

An option to cancel the download during the downloading process.

  1. Storage Location

All downloaded items are saved in the native apps, not on the device.

  1. Expiration Policy

The downloaded items expire in 24 to 48 hours or even up to a month.

  1. Playback Restriction

The user can play the downloaded items only in the native app.

User Flow

To understand the new feature better, I mapped out the basic user flow.

Sketching

Almost every project I design goes through a hand-sketching phase. The initial concepts prove useful throughout the entire project.

Version #1

The user can download a media item by pressing on the download icon. Once the download is complete, there are two ways to open the player:

  • From the Media Item page

  • From the Downloads page

Version #2

The user can download a media item by clicking on the download icon. Once clicked, a bar appears at the bottom of the page, indicating the percentage of the download progress. By clicking on the arrow, the user is redirected to the Downloads page. If the user wants to cancel the downloading process, there is an option to click on the close icon in the bottom bar.

Solution

Both versions were presented to the customers. Version #1 was approved for implementation for the following reasons:

  • Minimum changes in the application

  • Tight deadline

  • The bottom bar takes up extra screen space

Wireframes

The purpose of the wireframes is to convey the functions of the feature without getting into the visual design. Presented below are the wireframes of the Download feature, demonstrating where the user can find it in the application.

Downloading Feature

The example bellow illustrates the seamless download process within the application. Users can initiate a download with a single tap, track its progress in real time, and cancel if needed by clicking on icon itself.

iOS & Android app outcomes

The UI outcomes for the Android and iOS Latto apps maintain platform-specific design principles while ensuring a seamless user experience. On Android, the interface follows Material Design guidelines, featuring familiar elements like bottom navigation and floating action buttons. On iOS, the design aligns with Apple’s Human Interface Guidelines, utilizing native gestures, tab bars, and smooth transitions. Both versions prioritize clarity, accessibility, and intuitive navigation while incorporating Latto’s branding, ensuring a consistent and engaging experience for users.

Usability Testing & Conclusion

From brainstorming to the final result, the task was completed within a month. To validate the Download feature, LATTO PMs conducted user testing with the African clients.

Once the feature was officially launched, the conversion improved drastically.
